This summer I noticed CNN’s family of blogs were all powered by Wordpress — some still using the WP favicon! Now Matt Mullenweg notes that British newspaper Express and Star is 100% Wordpress-powered:
It’s exciting to see WP used this way on larger sites, especially after recent discussions regarding Wordpress as a CMS. But how much traffic can a Wordpress site handle?
There have been more reports of sites reverting back to their default (Kubrick) theme under heavy traffic, which some claim is due to RAM/caching issues on the server side. Just last week, a popular Stephen Colbert site was considering a switch to Mimbo, but unfortunately needed to postpone until the traffic and hosting issues were resolved.
Sounds like those kinds of errors are getting rarer. Turbocharged and Asymptomatic have provided some great info on keeping Wordpress performing strongly on any server, which has obviously not been an issue for so many “famous” blogs. Onward and upward for folks who want to use Wordpress for larger and more ambitious projects.

Some of those high-profile blogs might be a good fit for our VIP system, too:
http://wordpress.com/vip-hosting/
It hosts some of the highest profile blogs out there, like CNN’s Political Ticker and Flickr’s blog.

Could this be an incompatibility between wordpress and firefox? While using firefox I clicked the ’so many “famous” blogs’ link above (http://codex.wordpress.org/User:Matt/Famous_Blogs), and the result was a bit messy with overlapping text…

I don’t think there’s anything WordPress can’t do! The NFL will be using them as well so it should be interesting to see the press for this year’s Super Bowl!

I love word press. I think that everyone should use it.

I recommend wordpress to all of my clients. I have been impressed and have had very few problems. It is exciting to see WP show up on larger sites.
