Tell Me About Your Town
After thinking about it for awhile, I’ve committed to renting out my house for two months this summer so I can live abroad and work remotely. The plan is to find a room in some beach town, work on what is hopefully a reliable and fast connection, and otherwise travel, surf, read, write, drink in bars, and clear my head for awhile.
The question is: where am I going?
It’s scary to commit to leaving when you don’t have a destination. The folks renting my house are coming from Berlin, but I didn’t want to swap because Berlin is a bit too big and busy for me. Here’s the list of candidates so far:
- Cavtat, Croatia
- Šibenik, Croatia
- Hvar, Croatia
- Korcula, Croatia
- Pula, Croatia
- Dubrovnik, Croatia
- Zadar, Croatia
- Pula, Croatia
- Budva, Montenegro
- Kotor, Montenegro
- Porto, Portugal
- Ericeira, Portugal
- Cádiz, Spain
Lots of Dalmatian Coast towns there, though some are too expensive and potentially touristy. I’m honestly open to any country or continent (exceptions: Iraq, Burma, North Korea, Kenya).
So tell me something about your own town, or your favorite vacation spot. And if I end up in a town nearby, I’m always up for a beer and a chat.

Come on up to Steinbach, Manitoba Canada. It’s cold here. Inhumanly cold but the girls are hot so you have no excuse. Or do you? :)
How bout the Philippines? Summer is ahead and our beaches are great. Boracay and Palawan are one of the attractive tourist spots here.
beaches get boring fast.
Go to the Swiss Alps for inspiration
If India isn’t too far away, perhaps you might want to take a look at Goa or Alappuzha. The former is the smallest state in India, and is renowned for its beaches. If you are willing to travel all the way around the world, I am sure you will find both of these rather interesting.
Good call on Berlin… I hear the surfing sucks.
Come to Brasil!!!
if you come 2 Croatia Hvar, Korčula & Dubrovnik r the best places to be.. you can stay at 1 of them end visit the others by boat.. Korčula is the cheapest place to be of the 3.. If you by any chance get to Zagreb, send a mail so i can show u around, grab a coffee..
anyway thanks for the mambo theme.. loving it! ;o)
Agreed about surfing in Berlin. I’d also be concerned about bear/moose attacks while surfing Canada or the Alps. Better than sharks, though.
I am liking the suggestions of Brazil, Philippines and India, they are all on my long-term list. The beaches at Goa look awesome.
And Zeus, I’ll get in touch if I make it to Zagreb!
Hey, what about coming to Tahiti, French-Polynesia, South Pacific Ocean? Sea Sand Sun, Punch!
i forgot to say that in 2010, the Trans-Pacific cable would be done :)
Cant beat Egypt, sun, sea, culture & scuba diving! And it’s CHEAP!
Give me a couple of copies of Mimbo Pro when it’s done and I’ll teach you to dive ;)
I’d say Port Lincoln, South Australia, but it’ll be winter here, and I’ll be back in Northern Ireland by then too.
On top of that, there is always the possibility of a shark :)
I miss my Town, Bodrum, Turkey.
I’ll definitely recommend Bodrum for your summer vacation.
Bodrum is one of the most chosen town in Turkey during summer session.
You’ll find adorable places, great hotels and especially tremendous foods of Mediterranean.
Other places i also will recommend is; Antalya, Marmaris or our neighborhood country Greece.
I hope you’ll enjoy your some,
Good Luck
Come to Sicily, very beautiful place…and nice people…
From a native Virginian with family abroad. I suggest Buenos Aires, Argentina. The climate is very similar to ours only opposite seasons. It’s coastal South America within reach of Uruguay, Chile, and the beaches of Brazil. Patagonia and Cerro Aconcagua are there for you if you’re the adventurous type. Culturally, Buenos Aires has a very European feel. The exchange rate is extremely favorable for long term subsistence travel if you have U.S. income. I’ve had family expatriated there for a few years now and have had the fortune of vacationing there. Any questions feel free to drop me a line. - Gene
Man you gotta come to Coarsegold California (Kal-lee-fornia in Arnold speak)
We are a city (?) of about 2000 + or - folks, just a short distance from Yosemite.
Best Wishes

Eugene, Oregon.
Oregon is known for it’s vast array or natural beauty, from our publicly owned coast with amazing surfing and enough shipwrecks to keep an archaeologist busy for his entire life to our un-rivaled hiking areas.
Also, this summer Eugene is hosting the Olympic Track and Field trials.
Eugene has three major colleges, so there are plenty of youth, clubs, intellectual pursuits and other joys.
We also have to large rivers that are great for fishing, swimming, tubing and rafting.
Eugene is also one of the top places to ride your bike because of our more than 21 miles of dedicated bike paths.
An amazing place to spend a summer!
No votes yet for Indianapolis? Hmm. Wonder why. :)
The wife and I spent our honeymoon last Sept. in the NW region of Costa Rica. That’s about the extent of my international travel. (Unless you want to count evenings across the border in Canada when I was 19…)
Varna, Bulgaria
Come to Jamaica or any other caribbean island (Trinidad, Cayman Barbados) are all good. Just dont let anyone know its your first time, theyll jack up prices on you
I’m in Missouri but if I were heading out I’d want to go back to Kristianstad (SE tip of Norway) or Stockholm. Kristianstad is a great town, easy to get around in without a car, with water and seafood and plenty of sunshine. And reliable internet service, even back in 2002 when I tracked down grandpa’s relatives.
Of course, I went because of some old family roots. Another consideration would be the upcoming Euro 2008 Tourney. Both Portugal and Croatia are in. That should add to the atmosphere if you go to either of those countries!

Sanxenxo, Pontevedra, Spain, is such a cute place :P, you should try.
