I also wanted to add one more service to the list - it’s called Viewzi, from the folks at White Void. You can search subject matter from a variety of views (3D Photo Cloud, Simple Text, Shopping) and navigate the results in some interesting ways. So far, so good.

That's a cool concept, Franz. I'm wondering if you've had any troubles from sites that don't allow hotlinking of images? Does GIS have problems with this?

I also wanted to add one more service to the list - it's called Viewzi, from the folks at White Void. Update: just realized Nathan of SonSpring is actually working at Viewzi.

Yup, that's exactly it.

I must admit: I totally made that term up. I'm sure Apple's already named it something different - and applied for the copyright.

I assumed 'columnar flip' was only something UI hipsters would know about, but a Google search turned up empty ;) Is this the behavior you're talking about?

Thanks also for the link to Fluid, it looks great for workflow. I'd heard of Prism before but never knew anyone had expanded on the idea.

I don't know if it counts exactly, but another browsing paradigm, much older than some of these, is getting renewed recognition via the iPhone: columnar flip.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure if that's even the right term, but you see it in every made-for-iPhone app. Click a new option, the page slides in from page right. Go back? Previous returns from page left.

Apple's always favored columnar directory maps, so it's near they're getting renewed attention.

By the way, since I know you have a new Mac on the way, you gotta check out Fluid. At it's most basic, it lets you create single-site apps - think Gmail in your dock/taskbar. But it's got some super-cool html parsing stuff built in that lets you scan a page, and pull up child pages with a coverflow interface. In fact, someone recently used Fluid to create a muxtape app that's very similar to the one you mention above.
