Helvetica Still Looks like Hell in WinXP Browsers

December 24, 2007 ( 2 )

These are screengrabs from three very high-profile sites…At any size less than 1 em, the kerning and bolding look really crumbly and illegible in places. Tellingly, it’s very smooth and legible on a Mac Safari/Firefox platform. It’s strange to see otherwise good designers not checking their designs across common platforms.

Accidental Shills

December 19, 2007 ( 7 )

Last month I received an email with this subject line: “Bucks and Gallants mentioned in RollingStone.com!” It was sent by a good friend, but I figured it for a cruel mistake since B&G was my band, we were relatively unknown, plus we’d broken up ten months ago…

December 17, 2007 ( 17 )

An old friend began learning web design last month, but said she was feeling overwhelmed by what to learn first, who to learn it from, how to keep track of it all, and how to do it efficiently. I made her some notes on the tools that work best for me. Mostly obvious stuff, but hopefully it will be useful to some…

December 01, 2007 ( 29 )

Awhile back, I reviewed a premium (paid) Wordpress theme which sold for $99-$250 per download. Premium themes have continued taking root — I’ve spotted five other similar themes since then, all in that price range, all in the news and magazine layout style…

The Fuss Over Grids and CSS Frameworks

November 18, 2007 ( 7 )

A protracted discussion about CSS frameworks like Blueprint has broken out over at Jeff Croft’s blog. I respect everyone contributing to it, but the energy spent on that topic seems ridiculous with a capital R.
One of the only comments which spoke to me was by Jon Hicks:
I mentioned CSS frameworks on The Rissington Podcast, and [...]
